I teach first graders in a high-need community! The school is a low-income, high-poverty grade school in California. Our school is a Title I school where many of the students are homeless.
Even though they face many challenges such as being homeless, our students come to school excited and highly motivated to learn.
My students' come from home with hard working parents that work several low paying jobs. Often those low paying job are not sufficient to provide all their needs. They call cars, motels, and over-crowded apartments their homes.
In my first grade we do a great deal collaboration and brainstorming. Being able to write in large format allows all students to participate and to make a plan before writing. Currently we only have one whiteboard to write on, the same one as use for our projector. This means no cuFfs are ever permanent.
My class loves to write non-fiction essays and do research.
Having a portable whiteboard would allows us to brainstorm and map their idea and keep them handy as a reference. This will make a big difference in the quality of their writing and the confidence the will develop as the write.
