We have developed a sensory room designed to provide our students the tools to help with self-regulation. Sensory-based intervention is a fun and easy way to help our students do the very best they can.
These sensory strategies are used proactively in the form of a sensory diet. For example, if we know a student is expected to sit for a long period of time for testing that student can be provided sensory room time to engage in activities (e.g. jumping on trampoline, hopping/running in place) to help regulate that student in preparation for testing. The sensory equipment is also used reactively. For example, when a student becomes dysregulated, maybe due to unforeseen changes to scheduling. The student can be provided sensory room time for calming activities (e.g. yoga poses, kinetic sand molding, calm lighting and/or sound).
The sensory room provides student needed relief and is individualized for each of our students.
My Project
The sensory room is a place our students can go to regulate their bodies and calm their minds. Our students who become overstimulated with the hustle and bustle of the classroom or the volume of the cafeteria now have place to go where there are tools to use for regulation.
Bouncing on a ball, spinning in a swing, creating with sand, jumping and hopping, all provides the types of sensory feedback our students need for regulation.
The sensory provides immediate access to these tools. Children are empowered through these interventions and provided the opportunity to have control over their own bodies.
