I’m a second-year English teacher to approximately 150 high school students in grades 9 and 10. The reading levels of the students in my classes are very diverse, as is their general interest in reading. I believe much of the reading reluctance I encounter is because engaging, relevant texts are not easily accessible to today's teens.
I hope to instill a love of reading by providing students with a variety of texts in the classroom, allowing them choice in determining which text to read, and creating an inviting space to entice students to collaborate about what they've read.
Our school does not have a media center or library, so the texts in my classroom could be the only printed material students see. I've been able to incorporate a wider variety of texts into my classroom with the generous support of donations made through DonorsChoose. I hope you will help me continue to make a broader variety of reading material accessible and enticing to the students in my classroom!
My Project
When my high school sophomores learn they'll be reading Macbeth, their groans can be heard from down the hallway. Shakespeare's use of language is often intimidating, especially for students just learning the English language. Even strong readers are hesitant to approach the text based on Shakespeare's reputation.
Providing a graphic novel version of Macbeth will encourage students to approach the text with greater levels of confidence.
Many students read graphic novels for pleasure, so they are familiar with the format. In addition, the illustrations will deepen students' comprehension and help them make meaningful connections with the text.
