My Students

What are your fondest memories of school? Is it a specific teacher, a group of friends, a subject, a grade level? Think about a classroom where there was something for everyone, where what was offered was based on the student's interests and where the culture was one of value and respect. This is what we are aiming to create and offer, and I believe, this will be what the students remember.

My third grade class is made up of 20 diverse, energetic, inquisitive and curious students.

Almost half of my students are English Language learners and all of my students come from a range of backgrounds and supports and have a wide variety of interests.

Third grade can be a challenging year, as it is often referred to as the year where students go from learning to read to reading to learn. My students are challenged everyday to give their best effort and to maintain a never-give-up attitude even when things get tough. I am excited to take this journey with them and create the best of school memories yet.

My Project

Have you ever been in a situation and said the statement, "there just has to be a better way?" As I learn and look to teach the standards that lie before us in third grade, this statement echoed in my mind. There has to be a better way, a more engaging way, a more energetic way to teach. Through the book "The Wild Card," authors Hope and Wade King challenge their readers to bring their own interests and passions into the classroom to teach in a more effective manner. They discuss the importance of engagement on student learning and success. Some of my interests include playing and watching sports, reading books and playing games.

The items selected in this project bring mine and my students' interests into the classroom, and therefore, will help to create a classroom culture of respect, engagement and success.

The games will serve multiple purposes in allowing students to practice sportsmanship, respect for others and accountable talk, all the while practicing standards "the better way." Instead of always using pencil and paper, questions from traditional worksheets become the questions students must answer to take a turn in the game.

The books selected allow students to travel to new places, engage with important characters, learn to read for different purposes and ultimately build a love of reading. The picture books selected are great ways for me to model what good readers do when they read. They make effective mentor texts to guide writing lessons and support character education as students identify and learn from the traits and experiences of the characters. The chapter books series will be ones students can't put down.

When you donate to this project you are helping us find the better way to succeed.
