Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For some if us, it is not easy to sit in a chair, or sit on the rug and focus. This is something my students struggle with. Most of my students have sensory integration disorders and it is hard for them to focus on an activity or task because they can't sit still.
I am a Special Education teacher and I teach a preschool, self-contained class.
My school is a Title 1 school and most of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The funding at my school is limited and this leaves teachers with limited supplies to meet the needs of the students.
My students have varied disabilities ranging from speech and language delays, cognitive delays, gross/fine motor delays, to autism. We spend our day doing many activities to help the students learn and develop skills they are delayed in. One of disabilities that is most present in my classroom is sensory integration disorder. My students have a hard time sitting on the rug during circle time and sitting in a chair to complete a task. These are important skills they need to learn to succeed in school.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will help my students get the sensory input and stability they need. Using these materials will enable them to attend and focus. Using weight to provide proprioceptive feedback is effective for grounding children with sensory integration disorders and many other neurological challenges. The students will be able get the sensory input they need using fun materials.
The cushions can be used during circle time for the students to sit on. The students will have fun playing with the weighted Hound tote while at the same time getting sensory input. The massage balls and sensory balls will also be a fun way for the students to release their energy.
This project will improve my classroom tremendously.
My students will be able to gain sensory input using fun materials. Currently I am working with the Occupational Therapist at my school and using what I have in my classroom to meet the needs of the students, but I need more materials. I have a bean bag that I currently use to give the students sensory input. I also have the children push the wall to release their energy. The materials in my project will be a great addition!!
