Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Books are the foundation of education. We all know this. It truly is a sad fact that students in America do not have adequate access to them. The more exposure children have to quality literature, the richer their lives will be. Please give!
I am a first grade teacher in California.
Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent are Latino, and the remaining 10 percent are a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver.
The students at our school may lack the material privileges that other American children are fortunate to have, but they certainly make up for it with talent, fortitude, and sheer intelligence. We live in a world where our youth are simply not provided with enough quality resources to shine; your donation will make the dream of a bright future come true.
My Project
I am constantly developing and improving the science curriculum in my classroom. Most of the science taught in my class is taught through studies of the natural aspects of the urban environment we live in. We are very fortunate at our school to have a small garden that the children can visit to plant seeds and take care of. Many animals live in our garden; animals which we observe and study. These WORLD OF INSECTS books are excellent for learning about the animals the children observe throughout the year in and around our school garden.
I currently use two books from the series in my classroom already, one on earwigs and the other on aphids. The children learn about earwigs and aphids through book discussions and writing, and have many opportunities to observe the insects in our school garden. I would love to be able to expand the learning in my classroom with more book titles from the same series.
Children learn by doing.
Plain and simple. Project-centered learning, where students learn academic material through hands-on learning experiences, is in most experts' opinion the best, most effective, and most meaningful way to educate our young. And it's fun!
The inclusion of these high-quality science literature titles to the science curriculum in my classroom will have a lasting impact on student learning.
Kids can learn if provided with the materials! Please help!
