My classroom is unique; I see my students each day through software in a TV studio! I also visit them in person each semester, which means I visit the steepest mountain high schools and schools that are just minutes from the beach. The smallest school has only 35 students per grade!
My students are from rural schools all over the state that don't have traditional access to high quality STEM programming.
They access my course though interactive video conferencing, which allows them to participate in courses that they would otherwise be unable to take, either because of lack of expertise in the local school staff or because of scheduling challenges.
Every student deserves to achieve at his or her highest potential, regardless of their location within the state.
My Project
These materials are for an applied computer science course for 10th-12th grade students. They will use the sensors and sewing supplies along with small portable computers to design wearable devices. There is an emphasis on solving societal problems with these cutting edge technologies.
Imagine a student from my class building a vest with these resources that senses the magnetic fields of the earth and pulses when facing south - this is how Monarch butterflies migrate.
The student created technologies will be used in an actual zoo - imagine how zoo visitors will have a much greater appreciation for the animal's unique abilities by physically experiencing the animal's perception of the world! Imagine the learning that takes place when students learn about animals and then build a physical device that emulates their senses and movement!
Students will create also health and wellness applications. Imagine FitBit 2.0, or a sensor to help someone with diabetes, or a farming application that can tell when plants need more water and give it to them automatically! Students will participate in the Internet of Things revolution by actually making the technologies of the future. They will gain experience in creating circuits, building wearable devices, and applying design processes to their creations that use computational thinking strategies along with coding to make the devices functional. Best of all, most materials are re-usable and will be passed on to future sections of this course. These items support students that enjoy project based learning and want to use technology to make the world a better place!
