I teach Kindergarten at Liberty Elementary in Liberty, Mississippi. This is a 100% free lunch school. All of my students can't afford to eat, let alone buy any necessity. As a matter of fact, not one piece of physical education equipment can be found on the campus. Our school cannot afford to purchase any. That is why I am asking you help to "Solve the Couch Potato Crisis!" I am afraid we are creating a generation of couch potatoes in our school because we have nothing to offer them other than the "sit on your behind" classroom education. There are no manipulatives to use. By creating a physical activities lab, I can encourage, as well as show, my students that there is more to life than sitting, eating, and watching television. I can teach them about hopscotch, football, tag, and other physical activities. My students do not know what it's like to spend thirty minutes outside just skipping rope or playing with sidewalk chalk. I need to show them how to be active so that they can grow up to be active adults. Many of my students come from welfare families. I believe the physical activities lab can help some of them break that welfare cycle. Afterall, if kids are taught not to do anything, that is exactly what they are going to do. That is why I am reaching out to you. I hope you can help supply my Kindergarten class with a physical activities lab to help us "Solve the Couch Potato Crisis." Not only will this help my Kindergarten class, but it will help the other classes as well. We can share our equipment throughout the lower elementary, thus allowing over 300 students access to this physical activities lab. We at Liberty Elementary are tired of being Couch Potatoes. We want to learn to be active so that we can become active learners.
