My middle school is compiled of students from rural Sussex County in Southern Delaware. My students range from 11 to 14 years old and about 50% of our school is from low income families. That does not stop them from wanting to improve their lives with a great education, especially in Science.
My students are eager to learn science and love the hands-on aspect of STEAM challenges.
We choose community issues to help solve so students can see their ideas in action everyday. The students this year have chosen to work on the tidal flooding and storm surge issue in one of the local communities. They are excited to work to help the community.
My Project
STEAM requires the ability to obtain materials needed to solve a complex problem. The students are ready and willing to put the time in to solving a dire community issue. However, the need for materials is great. The materials requested are needed to research, design, build and test our flooding semi-permanent berm. Students will test different absorbent materials and berm packaging to see which would be more useful in a real world situation.
When the supplies are at hand, students are able to progress more rapidly in their project design and testing.
The funding for the materials will allow for us to jump right in to working on a solution to tidal flooding and storm surge.
