This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In a Detroit neighborhood is PHS, alma mater to notables Tim Meadows, J. Dilla, and Spencer Haywood. This epic building of late 19th-century brickwork hosts a beautiful dance studio where my students, the future notables, attend a class every day. These are 14-18-year-old kids, fantastic movers, with immense personality. Great dancers, great students, great reminders that electives work best when children clever kids just waiting to be dazzled.
In our classes, we study dance as an expressive art form, movement as exercise, and respect for bodily autonomy.
On the dance team, we are focused on building a sustainable program founded on sweat, smiles, and teamwork.
My Project
The Soldierettes Dance Team will be working on solo dance and movement exploration projects as we start our school year and dance team season remotely. With dance film, music video, online battles, these dancers need gear to arrive at these opportunities.
Help us look on point while we are online.
With a dance bag full of essentials; uniform practice wear, water bottle, and more, we can still be a team though we are in our own spaces. Should a socially distanced outside activity arise? No worries, Soldierettes will bring the sound with a portable speaker.
