My students are from a rural school district and they have a great desire to learn new things. They strive to get to the next level of understanding so they can delve deeper into the material. This leads them to take charge of their own learning inside as well as outside of class.
Lemelson MIT and Omro are piloting a new Water Inventions class where students identify and invent solutions to problems related to water locally and nationally.
My students have a natural curiosity for the sciences and I work as guide them through the numerous facets of the STEM field. We discuss concrete ideas in science as well as more complex abstract points that engage unique thought processes. All of my students have abilities that will push them through the challenges they will meet throughout their lives.
My Project
We currently use inexpensive soldering irons and these stations with the helping hand setups will make it safer and help students be more efficient and successful with their time in class when building their inventions. Our invention class is working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to pilot an education program around water, and how we can use invention to solve problems affecting water.
In our current course work students will be learning about invention and how it can be used to solve local problems.
They will be building small computers that will run different devices that the students create to solve a local and/or global problem. Those computers will be made from scratch and require soldering equipment. The small computers will connect to the Internet of Things cloud to work as data gathering tools. This data will be used in research of the students chosen problem and also to determine the success and viability of their invention long term.
