My Students

20+ urban high-needs students are willing to stay after school to learn college level math/science and do extra homework! And the majority of them are Freshmen! What more do I need to say!?

All of my students come from a high-needs school district.

The majority of students in my Engineering club are Freshmen. In terms of personality, they are awesome. The group is highly motivated and excited about learning computer engineering. One of the main driving factors for my students to join this club, is to see if they are able to handle college-level course work. The club is literally an extra class for the students. Each non-lab day, we are learning the academics needed to function as a computer engineer. The students are willing to do extra course work and additional homework. All of them aspire to be in amazing professions and I want to do my best to make sure they have a good step forward. The kids really deserve it. They deserve a chance.

My Project

Initially, I raised enough funds for 10 students - anticipating that was all my club would get due to the rigor, academic content, and extra research/homework associated with my club. With a solid 25 students, I am now trying to increase my supplies in order to match the demand! As of 12/18, I was finally able to raise enough funds for 5 more DC power supplies that were needed for 25 students. With that said, I was unable to get additional funds for additional resources in order to support all 25 students (which is what the box of capacitors are for). Recently, after showing my students how to fix electronics, my students got very excited about building projects (integrating electronics and materials - like putting LEDs and music circuits in toys). To do this, I need some hot glue guns, glue sticks, drills (for creating holes for wires) and drill bits. I also wanted to provide my students with a fun soldering activity and chose a cool FM radio! My students are very excited about it

Having taught engineering in college, I have created an after school program geared towards helping high needs students prepare for college-level electronics and computer engineering courses.

The curriculum focuses on the math/science related to the electronics as well as teaching students real-world applications. By the end of the club, students will have a great portfolio to show colleges, be able to get basic electronics jobs, and have a head start on engineering curriculum.
