Solar System Tour

My students need models of the solar system and books to do research about celestial bodies. This will include a scale model set that we will use on a field trip.

My Students

"Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. Without it, we go nowhere." - Carl Sagan Staring up at the sky, my students have questions about the universe around them. I want to give them tools and schema to use their creative, scientific thinking to reach for the stars.

My students come from all walks of life.

Some of my students don't have much exposure to astronomy. Some have never been to a museum, visited a planetarium, or looked through a real telescope. All of my students have an infectious curiosity, though, that needs to be cultivated!

My Project

Two classes of fifth graders will use the materials during a unit of study about our solar system. The kits will be used on a field trip to demonstrate the incredible size of the solar system. The books about the solar system will be used as part of an on-going research unit where the students will create projects on the different planets to present to their parents and other community members.

Our Science standards require the students to learn about the solar system and planets, but we are given very few materials with which to do this.

These materials will allow us to adequately teach our students in accordance with the standards by looking at the scale of the solar system mathematically with the kits and using the books for research. Also, these materials will help our students engage with space science. When they look up at the sky, we want them to see possibility staring them back
