Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want to empower my students through art and science! STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art, math) activities help us grow as scholars. Learning about the Solar System is exciting for my third graders. We can make a Solar System model/project that shows what we've learned!
My students are mostly Hispanic English Language Learners.
My class is nurturing and we love to work with our Special Education 3rd/4th grade class on many projects so they can learn grade level content too.
Our school's distinguished practice is technology, so I try to use STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art, math) activities as much as possible. We write in our STEAM notebooks often and just LOVE LEARNING! I believe that we can integrate STEAM into our language arts and social studies lessons as well.
I want to prepare my students for the future in college and careers.
My Project
My students and their "SDC Buddies" will learn about the solar system in science.
We will take notes in our STEAM notebooks so that we can make a display board with facts about the solar system. Thinking Maps will display the data/facts. The students will write a Planet Report about their favorite planet.
With our buddies, we will mold the Model Magic clay into proportioned balls shaped like the planets. After they dry, the students and buddies will paint the planets realistic colors and glue them onto cardboard display boards and label the planets with the markers.
Not only will they learn how to create a project worth displaying, but they learn patience and nurturing by working with our buddies. The students all learn to be hard working, persevere, and to take care to do a quality job on the project.
This project teaches science and art, and builds character as well.
It will be a project to show what they know, rather than just "give a test" at the end of the unit. My students don't have the resources to do these kinds of things at home, so we complete them in class.
Learning to help a friend like our special education buddies teaches life skills like acceptance, patience, and nurturing. The students' projects will be on display at Open House for family and friends to see.
