I am currently a Science Middle School teacher in a high needs New York area. I want to reactivate our school garden with my students but we are in need of soil and lots of it.
The children that I encounter on a day to day basis are faced with insurmountable obstacles.
Each day they strive for the best and are determine to overcome their learning disabilities and delays. Often they are stressed and frustrated with their battle. My children come to me when they need an outlet for their frustration. Often they have trouble expressing themselves, which only adds to their aggravation and many struggle to find an appropriate way to deal with their feelings. Due to the budget cuts schools are facing, teachers in my school are no longer able to personally give each student the resources they desire. Supplying my students with these gardening essentials would be a small step, but it would give us one less obstacle to overcome.
My Project
We would love to continue germinating seedlings in our school garden. I am in need of soil since we used raised garden beds. We would have enough to last the entire gardening season and would help ensure that students would eventually get to enjoy tasting our food bounty. Gardening offers hands-on, experiential learning opportunities in the natural and social sciences as well as nutrition. With recent concern over weak science and math skills among American children, the need for innovation in science and math teaching is apparent. There is mounting evidence that students who participate in school gardening score significantly higher on standardized science achievement tests (Klemmer, et.al. 2005).
Please support my project and help my students see their hard work through to the production of fruits and vegetables.
Every little bit helps, and we will greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide.
