Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 5 and 6 year olds that are cute and squirrelly and radiate potential! Five students are ELL, six students are considered at-risk for retention, three don't have any books in their homes, two have repeated kindergarten for the second year and four have attended three or more schools in the past year.
That being said, they are learning and growing.
But we need help to boost enthusiasm to get them focused, excited and ready for 1st grade.
My Project
A classroom carpet will give my students a soft space to sit on, while "reading" to their teddy bears, while reading with friends and finally while listening to stories during lessons.
An alphabet carpet would add an extra bonus for my struggling students, giving them a chance to play games on a sturdy surface while learning the essential skills they need.
I envision whole body movement games such as I-spy and Simon Says involving letter names and sounds.
Another advantage of having a classroom carpet is learning to compromise, taking turns, negotiating and having ownership of their soft space for the week.
