This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at our middle school are a very diverse group. We have many economically disadvantaged students and many transient students. Despite this, they come to school daily eager to learn and eager to improve. We are a Title I school with a population of 700 students ranging from autistic to academically gifted, as well as an ESL population. Demographically it is made up of 85 percent African American children with 100 percent of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. We often spend time as a whole group reading chapters from books, doing board games, and/or doing team-building activities on our carpet. We also like to do floor puzzles and build with legos on a soft carpeted surface. Carpet also helps to absorb sound and with a class of 30 middle schoolers, this is very important.
I would like a more sanitary and safe place for my students to be since they enjoy spending time on the floor while reading and playing.
Their health and well-being are extremely important to me especially in light of the recent pandemic.
My Project
These two rugs will provide the foundation for a creative, fresher, interactive learning space for cooperative play as well as for reading in the library for my middle school students. This soft, plush carpet will replace the 10-year-old carpet that is currently in the library's reading area.
We'll use this cleaner and more sanitary area for reading and play that will enable students to practice social/emotional skills such as teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship.
Students will be able to enjoy it before school in the mornings, during class visits, and after school.
