My Students
Most of the 6th-grade students are highly energetic, sponge-type learning individuals who come from various backgrounds. The children are from the Austin neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. Our school sits in the heart of the community and is the staple for the neighborhood as it relates to engaging in community projects and providing a safe-haven for students through after-school programs Monday through Thursday and some Saturdays.
Some of our students are not as motivated and thirst for tools to push their thinking and to build their stamina as well as support them in their thinking that they have the potential to become rocket scientists if they want to become such.
1/3 of my total sixth-grade population consists of gifted students who have been a part of the CPS comprehensive gifted program here for three years. They are eager and often welcome a challenge, especially when presented to them competitively.
My Project
These texts will afford my students the opportunity to explore concepts in literature that may directly affect their daily lives such as relationships, war and peace, identity, and fairness. The books will bring the concepts to life whereby students can recognize them and identify how to apply similar situations in the text for the purpose of problem solving not only for their benefit, but for the benefit of humanity. Students will take what they learn from the text to build upon projects that support their motivation to do well in reading and to strengthen their ability to rationalize and apply learning to life.
