Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For this project, the group of students who will benefit are those who are taking my Sociology elective next year. These students have curious minds and excellent self-reflection skills. As a mix of 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, the group will have different reading levels. However, the students at our high school have a great track record of mentorship and support of each other. While most of the students manage a rigorous course load, some are struggling to grow their motivation to engage with ideas academically. Those students need a way to connect with academic argument that is not as intimidating as traditional essay writing.

My Project

Students will read graphic/comic texts connected to Sociology that help them to understand some of the most complex and abstract philosophical concepts. They will also create essays of their own using these books as models. Using the essays in these books, the students will be able to see how academic writing can relate to all sorts of new view points into foundational concepts of Sociology. I hope that my Sociology students who struggle in other classes will make a big step forward in their academic self confidence and their writing skills as they work with Sociological concepts in a way that is more connected to culture that they consume in their free time.
