My Project

Social and emotional learning (SEL) helps children better understand their thoughts and emotions, become more self-aware, and develop more empathy for others within their community and the world around them. SEL helps build supportive relationships within the classroom and make responsible and caring decisions. Sensory processing affects daily life activities including social skills. Assisting the students to regulate their sensory needs will, in turn, help them to increase their ability to express their feelings and emotions.

Please help me build my SEL and sensory materials to create a calm space for my students so that I can better help them regulate, identify and express their emotions while feeling safe and comfortable.

My students may need explicit instruction when understanding social relationships and often require support and prompting to learn social skills. The emphasis on daily education within the co-taught classroom is on developing social, academic, and executive functioning skills.

Items such as fidgets, will provide a quiet, safe way for students to regulate their sensory needs during group activities. Sensory bin materials (putty) will help student regulate their sensory input. Books about feelings and emotions will help teach students about their feelings and how to identify them. Social skills games will help students practice identifying and labeling their feelings and emotions in a structured, small group setting.
