Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a bilingual school counselor in an urban setting. My students come to school with a variety of different life experiences. Some may have gone through adverse experiences or may be living in a homeless situation, this can impact their sense of safety and/or well being and their ability to sustain attention in school to succeed. Others may experience academic struggles and have limited support from adults at home due to various factors.
As soon as they walk through our doors, they may have had a challenging start to their day for wide range of factors and reasons.
We want school to continue to be a safe, comfortable environment in which demonstrate that we care about their success as a whole child.
Every day that I work with our students, I know that they have the potential to grow as learners and to develop strong social-emotional skills. These skills will help them to problem solve, show empathy, regulate their emotions in healthy ways, challenge themselves to have a growth mindset, and strive to be kind and caring individuals in our community.
My Project
Our students will benefit from the various materials in this project for several reasons. Students will be able to play with safe physical distancing in times of the pandemic with these materials. The jump ropes will come in handy for students to have fun and exercise jumping rope outdoors during recess. In addition, the hopscotch game and ring toss game will promote social skills in a safe manner. At the beginning of the school year we had used some left over sidewalk chalk from the previous school year but soon ran out to share with the number of classes we have in the lower elementary school. It would be great to have more sidewalk chalk in order to have more classrooms enjoy this fun and safe activity outdoors during their recess time.
Due to the pandemic students are not able to use the playground equipment they used to use in the park so having these additional materials for them to enjoy and have fun in a safe manner (masked up and with distancing) will be very beneficial.
We have gotten creative with the materials that students can use safely to have fun outdoors and I am hopeful that my project will be funded to continue moving forward this school year with additional safe and fun student activities for recess.
