Many students across the globe are dealing with sudden changes due to COVID-19. As an educator I feel that it is extremely important to focus on the mental health of my students. Mental health effects during a global pandemic are very important to monitor, especially in children. Although it has been estimated that youth and young adults have the lowest mortality rates from COVID-19, they are not immune to its consequences.
My Project
The coronavirus has transformed life as we know it. Schools we closed, and we were confined to our homes which made the future feels very uncertain. It is a daily struggle to get back to our normal routines. A great way for students to express themselves is to write about their feelings.
Think about it we are living through history.
Future historians may look back on the journals, essays and art that ordinary people are creating now to tell the story of life during the coronavirus.
Writing can also be deeply therapeutic. It can be a way to express our fears, hopes and joys. It can help us make sense of the world and our place in it. Writing can help us reflect on what’s happening in our lives and form new ideas.
This free writing project will be to inspire my students to use various writing tools to keep the lines of communication open. The students will be encouraged to do the following for the first 6 weeks and share their experience at a socially appropriate celebration.
Student pledge:
I pledge to use my words to speak in a kind way.
-Write notes of friendship
-List all the things that make you happy.
-Send Peaceful Pen Pal letters to other kids.
-Write and mail cards to senior homes to bring extra love and comfort to senior citizens who can no longer receive visitors due to the COVID-19 situation.
-Hold gratitude circles with their family at dinnertime.
-Make up a list poems with positive messages.
-Write positive messages on Post-It Notes and place on mirrors in your house. Take a picture and be prepared to discuss your thoughts with the class.
When they feel like their project piece is “something great,” they’ll submitting it.
