Social/Emotional Skills Instruction for Students with Autism& Emotional Disabilities
My students need color visual supports, high quality curriculum, and fidget toys to help the get the most out of their education and overcome their disabilities!
I work with center-based special education programs in Harrison School District to provide professional development support to teachers and paras, instructional support, and problem solving to these programs. HSD2 has programs for students with significant impacts from Autism, more high functioning Autism, emotional/behavioral disabilities, and cognitive disabilities, and moderate needs My job involves going into special education programs, assessing the needs of the students and the teachers, and developing plans to help address these needs. The needs may be for additional professional development for the teacher (e.g. teacher wants to learn new ways to teach social skills), or the student (e.g. the student needs a behavioral assessment and plan), and it is my job to meet those needs!
My Project
I have put this list together for donors choose to help me build my program and support a very diverse set of students across the district from kindergarten to 12th grade. I have chosen curriculum such as Super Skills, Behavior Management Without Tears, and Prevent Teach Reinforce to help bring accessible curriculum that is easily implemented by teachers to a wide range of students. Items like a color printer and fidget toys will help be produce and provide high quality supports to teachers and directly to students. Students with disabilities are capable of achieving so much, and small things like a high quality visual support or some sensory input go a long way in a classroom. I have also asked for professional level books like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Tactics of Scientific Research to help build a baseline of evidence based practices for mental health needs and progress monitoring to my district. HSD2 has a significantly economically impacted and diverse population and we have found that mental health issues are also significantly impacting our students. We desperately need to know what evidence based practices work in schools as well as whether what we are doing is working. Thank you for helping me address the needs in my district!
