Help me give my students a chance to work on coping with the many emotions that can develop as well as how to treat others. These stories will help me build their social/emotional skills.
I have been fortunate enough to work with a wonderful group of students in a small kindergarten through 8th grade charter school. My students are talented, inquisitive, enthusiastic individuals who love learning.
As a kindergarten teacher, my students come to school ready learn the fundamentals that are imperative to their academic success.
Many of my students face challenges in their daily lives that can impact their learning. It is my responsibility to make sure that they are equipped with the necessary skills to achieve. This includes learning how to behave socially and emotionally in a classroom.
My Project
Upon entering kindergarten, students can sometimes face a difficult transition. Their emotions can run strong which can hinder their academics. Stories such as "A Little Spot of Kindness" and "Too Shy for Show and Tell" will allow me to combine social/emotional lessons with fascinating picture books to ease the transition.
Social and emotional skills are crucial for success in school.
These school readiness skills aid in communication with other students, ability to resolve conflicts, displaying kindness towards others, and providing ways to cope with any challenges a young child might face.
By creating a classroom library with meaningful literacy that includes social and emotional stories, I can better equip my students for not only their lives in the classroom but also outside the school. I especially like the story "A Book of Mistakes" which teaches children that mistakes can happen and when they do something inspirational might occur because of it. This project will allow me to enhance their social and emotional skills through picture books.
