My students need the tools to function in society beyond school. These tools include the ability to act appropriately in social situation and coping skills. The Coping Skills game, Early Learning Cards and Board Games will teach my kids essential coping skills!
My students show up every day despite their struggles, and they put forth so much effort. They come into my room everyday, upbeat, ready to work and not without smiles. As a teacher in a Title I school, where breakfast and lunch is free to all students due to the level of poverty, I am impressed everyday with the attitudes of my students.
Students with disabilities have unique needs, which is why they have individualized plans.
These needs also include social skills and coping skills for a multitude of emotional issues. My students need to learn the skills necessary to survive on a social and emotional level beyond school. Some of their success later in life will depend on the skills I give them to succeed in a world far bigger than they know now.
My Project
As a special education teacher, it is important for me to find ways to engage students who struggle. My students show up every day despite their struggles, and they put forth so much effort. Many of their struggles include social skills and coping skills for a variety of emotional issues. These are skills that many of us take for granted. There are not many options available to teachers to teach them the social skills and coping skills they need to be successful in a world beyond school. Students with disabilities have unique needs, which is why they have individualized plans. Many of their plans involve goals to help them with social skills and coping skills.
Finding programs and resources to help these students can be difficult because their needs vary so drastically.
Students who have an emotional disability lack emotional awareness, coping skills and the ability to think flexibly. The Coping Skills game will teach my students essential coping skills through game play, which is engaging and fun. Students who lack social skills often lack the ability to recognize social cues in others. Photographic learning cards are a good tool to use in the classroom! My current students, as well as many, many future students, will benefit from this project for years to come!
