Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a fifth grade teacher working in a school with energetic and eager students. We consist of approximately 90% free and reduced lunch students. I have taught 5th grade in North Carolina for 5 years and have students with different learning levels and disabilities in my classroom. Throughout this time, I have searched for resources to help students on all levels enhance their knowledge of history and work on reading skills in a way that is on their level, interesting, and exciting. At the same time following the North Carolina social studies curriculum. The USA Studies Weekly - Explorers to the 1880s publication examines the history of the United States from the early explorers to the present day as required by the Social Studies curriculum. It brings history alive for students with easy to read articles, maps, activities, colorful illustrations, high level questioning, diagrams, character traits, contests to encourage involvement in government and economy, games and puzzles, and research ideas. In order to gain maximum usage from this publication I would like to have 25 issues at a cost of $4.00 per issue for the 2006 - 2007 school year {totaling $100.00}. It is projected that I will have at least 25 students of multiple levels, backgrounds, and economic standings. The ability to provide all students with the fullest experience and a well rounded social studies curriculum has been a dream. It will allow for all educational levels to enhance reading skills and soar above End of Grade Test/ No Child Left Behind requirements and would be a welcome addition to my classroom.
