This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a public Montessori school. Our environment is very peaceful and students are focused on completing independent work (typically hands-on) while I work with small groups or individuals. I am passionate about literacy and helping students learn to love reading and writing too!
I have a very diverse class of first and second grade students.
Each has unique needs and learning styles, but most of them find school to be a comforting place where they are well cared for. Students are challenged to work hard, work independently as well as cooperatively, and work toward meeting goals that we set together!
My Project
Our social studies lessons require the requested books as a significant part of the lesson. Currently, we have none of the books available in our classrooms. Our school does not have a "school" library, and the classroom library has been mostly built with my own resources.
Our students are the future of our country!
These social studies concepts, when introduced in the early grades, prepare students to be a member of society. We start discussing students' responsibility to vote, understand why we have rules in place, and so many other important concepts for students to know and understand.
