Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths pure theater." This is a quote that I live and die by in my classroom. While preparing for each lesson, it is important and necessary, to keep my students engaged and happy. However, the right amount of energy and obvious dedication to my career and students is even more important.
In a classroom of 32 second graders, providing meaningful experiences for each child is paramount.
Every day should be full of both learning and fun while providing an environment providing the safety, love, and confidence each student needs to thrive.
This year, I have a wonderful group of gifted and talented students that are full of incredible thoughts, ideas, and interests. It is my hope that through this project, I can offer them some enrichment into a jam packed day of curriculum.
My Project
In the NYC 2nd Grade Social Studies curriculum, students learn about the history of NYC starting with the Native Americans that lived here long before Europeans came. I want to incorporate all of the detailed learning of Native American homes (inside and out), communities, and culture through art.
Students will use clay, shaping tools, and rolling pins to craft three dimensional versions of the Lenape villages we are studying in class.
I can read them books and show them many pictures. But through building their own villages, students can have a deeper understanding of the time and effort that was placed into building these communities.
Students will also develop teamwork skills as they divide and conquer the work to develop all aspects of these villages. From the actual structure of the buildings they lived in, to the crops and tools they used daily, students will be modeling and making a world they can only see now in books.
