Help me give my students books that support social emotional learning! I want to provide more books in my classroom that model feelings, emotions, mindfulness, being present, growth mindset, courage and empathy.
My students are growing kindergarten students. They are developing a growth mindset by learning to solve problems on their own and welcoming challenges to make their brain grow. They have parents that care about their academic progress and hold their standards high. They live in a small community where education is valued. My students are eager to learn! They are emergent readers that practice reading both at home and at school.
My kindergarten students are learning social smarts- social emotional learning skills.
We are learning skills to be mindful and present. We are learning to recognize our emotions and the Zones of Regulation. We are learning tools that we can add to our toolbox to regulate our emotions. All of these skills and tools are important for us to be in a state where we are ready to learn and interact with others.
We are learning about cooperation, gratitude, courage, empathy- all important skills for our future.
My Project
The books provided from this project are all books that will be used to model social emotional learning in the classroom. Using children's literature to assist teaching social emotional skills has many benefits. Stories provide easy and creative introduction to these sometimes abstract skills. Lessons can be anchored to these skills presented in the story.
Literature provides a relevant example of how to use skills, what to do in certain situations and students can relate to the characters.
Books can encourage students to pay attention to their own actions and behaviors. Books often are fun for students to read and interact with, it may not be seen as normal direct instruction lesson, which may be more engaging opportunity for students.
Not only will these books provide social emotional learning, they will expose children to vocabulary and comprehension skills.
