Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My name is Harmony Salinas and I feel blessed to be the school counselor to 650 amazing elementary school students. My students get an opportunity to spend time with me each week. They look forward to working on developing all aspects of themselves-social, career, and academic! The smiles on their faces when I enter their classrooms is priceless. The time we spend together shapes who they are and who they will become. They have a thirst for learning about themselves and others and work hard to serve their classrooms and community. They practice being kind and working together to make our school a special place. They understand that our differences make us valued and that they are loved by everyone within our school community. I am excited about the new school year and seeing all their growth! Here's to an amazing year!!!
My Project
We often assume students are developing appropriate social skills at home. In reality, social skills need to be introduced, reinforced and modeled at school as well.
Very young students often learn about social skills through stories in which characters deal with real-life situations.
I plan to use these stories to develop social skills for my students including conflict resolution, making friends, career development, emotion regulation, table manners, divorce, grief, coping skills, and apologizing.
For example, "I Just Don't Like the Sound of No!" helps students cope when they cannot have their way. Role-playing as characters adds to their experience by helping them model appropriate behavior. The book "Sorry, I Forgot to Ask!", helps students learn how to ask permission and make an apology. These are skills all of us rely on.
