My Students

My students are a diverse group of young people. They come from the far corners of the world and from just around the corner. They reflect all of the beautiful shades of hair, skin and eye color. They represent all major religions, and no religion at all. They are the 'melting pot' of the United States.

All of my students are excited, hopeful, eager-and under served.

Through all my students' difference, they also share commonalities. Most come from poverty, many from single parent homes, they speak a language other than English at home or are classified as special education. Nearly all are considered 'not school ready' even before they enter into Kindergarten.

But the one similarity all of my students share is that they come to school every day wanting to learn, willing to learn and waiting to learn.

My Project

I am requesting a science lab to help lead students through a weekly science experiment. My students often do not get to work through an experiment due to having to use the district mandated science curriculum. I hope to do both with this science lab.

There are many important life lessons learned in completing a science experiment.

Starting with generating a hypothesis based on reason, designing, setting up and following through on a plan, and revising your thinking when your first thought was not substantiated are all social skills learned through science. Most importantly though is learning to think and reason.

Many of my students have low social-emotional skills and have already become complacent in their own learning. I can help them gain skills in both areas through teaching science.

Help my students discover new ideas while discovering their own potential.
