This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in Ferguson, MO. I have a classroom with a variety of abilities. A lot of our students have faced trauma in one way or another.
The students in my classroom are all special education students, and it is a self-contained classroom for grades K-2.
My students each have individual needs and are on a variety of levels. When designing instruction, I differentiate for each student. They need a lot of repetition and direct instruction. They also enjoy learning about science and social studies topics. My students have a difficult time with focus during instruction and independent work. I have students who have behavior interventions in place and need a lot of sensory breaks to be successful. I also have students who are non-verbal and need ways to communicate throughout the day.
The school does not provide the special education program with curriculum. I have been able to find useful resources online to create a curriculum to benefit my students. We are not provided with paper to make copies and print materials. Our classroom needs visual supports, but we are not provided with a color printer to print visuals.
My Project
The students in my classroom have a mix of ability levels and come from a variety of settings. The students are kindergarten through second grade and are still understanding basic social skills concepts. We are not provided with curriculum for our specialized programs to teach social skills. I spent time researching programs that would fit my students and found these books by Julia Cook.
Learning through books gives students additional opportunities to understand reading and social skills.
The social skills books address a variety of skills including; tragedy, bullying, death, being a friend, stealing, and much more. These skills are very important for my students to be successful.
