Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how hard it was to make friends in middle school? My students need a social skills curriculum to help them learn to make friends.
My students attend a public middle school in Los Angeles, California.
They have high functioning autism/aspergers. All of my students are mainstreamed into general educations classes and I teach them social/communications skills for one period daily. They all face great difficulty making friends and are often bullied. They struggle with oral communications, reading facial and body expressions, initiate and sustaining conversations, and understanding idioms and sarcasm.
My Project
Currently my school district does not have a social skills curriculum to use. Over the years I have done intense research on the best strategies to use and have never found a source that contained lessons and worksheets until now! Michelle Garcia Winners books provides step-by-step methods for teaching social-cognitive and communicative skills to students who have these challenges that affect their school and home life. The lessons spans from kindergarten to adulthood and educators are encouraged to modify activities to better fit the age of the students. Ms. Winner's books and lessons focus on social thinking which she explains as "what we do when we interact with people: we think about them and how we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions".
Your donations will make a huge impact for my students.
The curriculum and worksheets books will help improve their social skills to make it easier for them to make friends with their grade level peers.
