My students need social skills and they are going to work on these projects together to sort, plan, and put them together as a team using shared interests to get them to work together. I am requesting Lego and K'NEX building kits.
The students in my program have behavioral difficulties and need to improve their social-emotional skills. The majority of these students come from poverty-stricken homes. Most of them are in Special Education because of their lack of social skills. The lack of social skills has made it difficult for them to participate in small and large groups in the Regular Education setting. Regular Social Skills programs have not been completely successful with this group due to the lack of interest in the programs.
My Project
The students in my program have social/emotional deficits. The students can improve these deficits by working on their social skills. The Lego projects are a fun way to get the kids to learn to communicate their needs, work together, and express their needs to other people.
Research has shown that using Lego-based Social Skills curriculum has proven to improve maladaptive behavior and social interactions.
The students will use the Lego sets or the K'NEX sets during their social skills sessions. Each set will be done by the different groups I have. Once they complete one set, they will be evaluated on how they did and they will begin another set. The hope is that each time a set is complete and the evaluation is gone over that the students will see where they need to improve, and with support, their social skills will improve. These sets will help our students work on skills using shared interests to pique their participation in the groups. The students will start off by sorting all the pieces they need for the project. Then they will communicate with each other to come up with a plan and go over the directions from the set. Once they have a plan of action they will put the plan of action into play and work on the set. These sets will most likely take multiple social skill group sessions to complete.
