Have you ever felt like a fish out of water? My students feel like that all the time. They are put in social situations all day that they struggle to manage and relate to, and have trouble managing their emotions.
My students all have emotional disabilities, which means they have diagnosed problems managing their emotions, whether it's because they have ADHD, Autism, or learning disabilities that cause them stress.
They have a hard time relating to others and getting through their day, and need instruction on how to do this. They are bright and creative, and tons of fun to work with, even when they're having a hard time.
Our school is amazingly supportive, with a fantastic staff that understands them and is patient, but like any other school we are feeling the effect of budget cuts. These supplies will go not just towards my students, but also other students in the classes they are in.
My Project
I've used these resources when I was student teaching. The Superflex curriculum is a fantastically fun curriculum for getting students with emotional disabilities, Autism, ADHD and other needs to understand how their brains work, become better at managing their own emotions and recognizing others' emotions, and self-regulating. These books will allow me to deliver lessons on helping to focus and avoid overreaction, anxiety, bullying and many, many more social/emotional topics to my students and other at-risk students at my school.
My students have a lot of support and care at my school, but we need a dedicated curriculum for teaching them how to cope with the stressful situations they are in all day.
