My students need The Green Zone Conversation Book, social stories, social skill board games, and conversation starters to increase use of appropriate social skills.
My students are in kindergarten through eighth grade, and they receive speech and language support services for articulation, language, fluency, and/or social communication. My students attend a public school in an urban area in Pennsylvania. Our school is a Title 1 school and most students qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program.
Many of the students on my caseload have poorly developed social skills and need explicit instruction in social skills in order to develop positive relationships with peers.
Students with autism spectrum disorders or learning disabilities do not always understand the 'hidden curriculum' and unspoken rules that are necessary to be successful in school.
My Project
Well-developed social skills can help children with disabilities develop strong and positive peer relationships and lead to academic success at school. Social skills enable us to know what to say, how to make good choices, and how to act in various situations.
Social skills become a 'hidden curriculum' — rules that students are held accountable for but are never explicitly explained or taught.
The materials that I am requesting will enable my students to be successful navigating the hidden curriculum at school. In conversation, children on the autism spectrum often have difficulty selecting topics of interest to others. The Green Zone Conversation Book provides a simple visual model to help children experience success in finding common ground in conversation.
Super Duper Social Skills Quick Take Along Mini Book targets a variety of social skills that students need in order to be successful. Social stories will explicitly teach students how to handle change, how to deal with anger, how to request and offer help, how to accept 'no' as an answer, and how to let others know when they don't understand.
The Chat Pack and Conversation Cubes will give students practice with topic maintenance and topic expansion.
