Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach special education students from Kindergarten through Second Grade at a Title 1 school with over 80% of our students in the low income/high poverty category. My students are excited to learn and work hard in class. We need additional supplies and activities to work on social skills!
This year because of Hurricane Maria, our school has welcomed many students from Puerto Rico.
These students need high interest and hands on materials to stay engaged in our lessons. Not only are these students working to learn a new language, many of them have difficulty in social situations! I want them to have all of the tools they need to be as successful as possible.
My Project
My students need engaging books to learn about different social situations and ways to handle them. I teach AMAZING children who struggle with new situations that they have yet to encounter. I have found that when I expose them to situations through literature, they are more successful when faced with the same issue.
Social Skills books open a new world to my students where they are able to experience things that may be uncomfortable for them in a safe and loving environment.
This helps them to be able to handle the same types of situations when they occur in social settings.
