Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community." ~ Cesar Chavez
My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students.
My students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism, and intellectual disabilities. Many of them are also English Language Learners. My students show greater enthusiasm when learning is interactive, interesting, and collaborative. They are motivated when they have access to a variety of resources and multi-sensory learning opportunities.
My school is located in a large urban city. Of the 3,100 students 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. A majority of my students are low-income, have disabilities, and are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learners status, or disabilities hinder their academic or social-emotional growth.
My Project
My students are not the most avid readers and writers, but have shown interest in particular social justice topics and service learning activities. They will explore the themes of justice, voice, community and race through critical literacy activities. They will use community stories, film (such as, Just Mercy) and articles to engage in the process.
My students deserve to have access to field trips to watch related films so that they can utilize the strategies they learn in class to explore and write about social justice topics that are important to them.
Because many of my students are low-income, many don't often have the opportunity to go to the movies and purchase snacks at the theater. My students overcome personal, academic and community obstacles on a daily basis, and deserve experiential learning experiences. They are no strangers to injustice, so being able to view a film like Just Mercy is a very important opportunity.
As they participate in the unit and explore the themes, they will make personal connections to their own lives or communities. The film will be used as a Close View lesson within the unit. During the Critical Literacy unit, students will use their voices to develop and share social justice oriented projects of their choice.
