My students need books related to social justice. They will be learning about what social justice is, reading nonfiction articles, and then in book groups will read a novel that is related to a social justice.

Unique, diverse, multi-faceted, awesome. These are just a few words to describe my wonderful eighth graders. Walk into my classroom on any given day and you will see a room full of faces that represent all cultures. Full of energy and eager to learn is the only way to describe this group of young adolescents. They walk in the door ready to tackle whatever complex text is placed in front of them.
They have taught me just as much as I have taught them, and I am so excited to have this opportunity to expose them to the arts.
Social Justice is an important issue for all students to understand. Students will be engaged in a unit focused on social justice and what it is. They will read articles that are related to the topic, read speeches that have been given, watch music videos based on the topic and then finish the unit by reading a novel whose subject matter is related to social justice.
What better way to help students understand social justice then through the reading of a novel?
Students will work in groups to read the books that have been selected for this project and will work together to analyze ways that social justice is discussed in the books.
