WJH is a large, urban, Title One, public school with just under one thgousand students. Our students have a variety of economic backgrounds, with seventy-seven percent qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. Many students receive backpacks of food to take home on the weekend. My school provides notebooks, pencils, backpacks, warm clothes, coats, and other resources to help families.
My school has a vibrant and diverse population of students.
Students come from various countries all over the globe and speak various languages. A significant percentage of students are reading below grade level and need extra help to master literacy standards so I make sure to accommodate my lessons to help both the high achievers and the struggling readers.
My eighth grade students will be partnering with a third grade classroom virtually, once a week to be reading buddies. My students will be reading the Social Justice Children's books - like We are All Wonders, Return to Sender, etc. - to their reading buddy as well.
Even more exciting, as they study the mentor texts like Somos Como Las Nubes, Separate is Never Equal, Grace for President, my students will then author their own Children's Social Justice Book featuring their third grade reading buddy as the super hero main character in the book.
We will publish them and give them as a gift to our reading buddies at a Publication Celebration.
