Students in my classroom come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. My classroom is a combined classroom of 3rd and 4th grade students. They are curious about the world and ready to engage in a variety of subjects with passion and excitement.
My students engage in a variety of activities that require them to interact with each other and take ownership of their learning.
Some of these activities include, literature circles, science groups, writing workshops and critical problem solving in math. They are constantly interacting with different peers and using communication skills to explore topics and learn new things.
My Project
One of the ways I teach social studies is through literature. My 3rd and 4th grade students will read books that deal with various times in history and explore themes of oppression and resistance through literature. When reading these books, my students will be participating in literature circles. The get into small groups and read and discuss books together. Then they present their work to the class.
The books in this project help students engage in critical dialogue around themes of oppression and resistance.
They will be able to learn about important people and events through books and make connections to current events and personal experience.
Students will read Talking Leaves, a story about Sequoyah and his daughter Uwohali's quest to create a Cherokee alphabet.
Another books I have chosen is Elijah of Buxton, a historical fiction story that takes place during slavery. The main character, Elijah is born free in Canada's Buxton settlement, a refuge for former slaves and their families.
In addition to books, I am asking for 2 bean bag chairs to help create a reading corner for kids to have a comfortable place to sit and read books. Students will take turns sitting in the beanbags during literature circles.
