I teach at a Title 1 school with a diverse group of learners. Their differences are many, but they share one thing in common: they love learning! They don't like to admit it, but they have a hard time hiding it. They may complain about their own growing experiences, but when I started propagating succulents in the back of the room, they were brimming with questions. They may complain about taking a test, but when their knowledge is put to the test in a round of Quizlet Live or Kahoot, they can't wait to show off what they know. I love their energy and enthusiasm.
What I love most about my students, though, is that they are eager to help each other.
I often say "Once you have it, check on your neighbor," when giving instructions. Students in the past may have ignored me, but this year's group promptly leans over to check on their neighbor. Some even hop up to check on the whole class. And I can't count how many times a kid has asked me for a pencil only to have another student offer them one before I can even blink. They amaze me every single day.
My Project
Our social issues research project is always a favorite among the students. This year, we are building on it by adding in social issues book clubs! Students will be grouped based on interests in various social issues. This will build a strong foundation for students to begin thinking and talking about their topic.
I want each of my students to have access to a book that will spark their desire to make a difference in the world.
I have compiled a list of texts centered around social issues that I know my students will fall in love with. Each student will choose a book which they will read, annotate, and share within their book club. They will learn from their books and each other about the social issue addressed in their book. Then they will work together to find solutions.
