My sixth grade classroom is a dynamic environment comprised of individuals with many strengths, talents, and experiences. Individuals who are curious, kind, and creative. Together, we strive to build a community of readers, writers, thinkers, and doers. My students are passionate people, who pose questions about the world around them, who are eager to learn more, and who want to make a difference.
Throughout our year together, my students will read stories that will help them discover new things about themselves, others, and their world.
I truly believe that every student deserves a classroom library that provides mirrors, windows, and sliding doors. This allows students to see themselves in texts and to view and enter the world around them.
My Project
Middle school is a unique time in an individual’s life. Students are discovering new things about themselves, navigating new and old friendships, while at the same time becoming more aware of the world around them. They are posing questions, challenging their thinking, and striving to initiate positive change. They are beginning to understand that the world is a complicated place. The titles purchased include characters who are navigating similar and new situations. These texts will give students the opportunity to participate in social issue book clubs.
Participating in social issue book clubs will give students the chance to see the world through different lenses-- including the character and their peers.
This will challenge students to think more deeply while learning important life lessons connecting to one of the following topics: fitting in, overcoming obstacles, racism, believing in yourself, finding the good in people, and dealing with hardships.
This project will give students access to a wide variety of texts. It will also help them strengthen their interpersonal skills, and maybe even inspire them to make change.
