Social Injustice: A Modern Approach

Help me give my students more student choice in what books they read in my classroom.

My Students

My students are great teenagers who appreciate a quality education. They know when a teacher works hard for them, and they will return the efforts when the topic is engaging to them. They are not afraid to take on a challenge, and they love any moment they can get to laugh and have a good time. Even though my students are great, I still have to look for new ways to keep them engaged, and I hope that DonorsChoose will give me the opportunity to fund some new ideas that I have for them.

My Project

To Kill a Mockingbird is a timeless classic, but I sometimes struggle with helping my students find the novel relevant. After attending a conference, I got the idea to use the novel as a anchor text to discuss social injustice, but to also incorporate more modern literature in the classroom. I am building my classroom library with more novels that focus on social injustice so that students can have more choice in what they read. Students will use literature circles to discuss their book of choice and gain a deeper understanding of how they can be the change they want to see.
