This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have some of the greatest students in the St. Louis area. My students are so great because even though they come from all different backgrounds, they work together so well. I know that when they go home, they face challenges that children should not have to face. I want to make sure that when they enter my school, they have only the best learning experience.
As the school counselor, it's my job to make sure there are no barriers to their full participation.
I see that so many of our students face challenges beyond imagining, but when they come into the school, I help them let go of those challenges and just be a kid at school.
My Project
As the school counselor, I'll give these calming tools, such as fidget tools, journals, and sensory tools, to students that need help coping with their anxiety in class. Kiddos are still learning how to cope with their social and emotional needs. Sometimes they aren't exactly sure how to regulate themselves. These kits, all the calming tools put into the pencil pouch, provide them with tangible tools to help in this process.
This has been a particularly difficult start to the school year and kiddos need a little extra help adjusting to their "new normal." Since we're all back in person this year, I've seen my kiddos finding it difficult to sit in a classroom for 7 hours a day.
This was always a difficult task before the pandemic, but since coming back to a somewhat regular year they've really struggled with it.
These kits will be their personal resource to guide them through the process of getting back into the swing of things in this unprecedented time. Kiddos are very resilient but they also need help figuring out how to cope with the expectations put on them. These tools will help my students better access their own abilities to cope with the stress of coming back to school in our new normal.
