Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students make us smile every minute of the day. Whether it is because they just said their first successful sentence in English or have shared their feelings in our daily social-emotional circle. We work with a diverse group of very special children. Each one is unique in his/her own way. Our classroom is combined 6th-8th grade students who travel through a continuous war zone to come to school every day eager to learn. They are a diverse population, that face many challenges such as special needs, social-emotional trauma, along with being the first in their family to have a formal education, yet they are survivors who refuse to let these obstacles get in their way.
My Project
Impulse control, building relationships, teaching manners, showing kindness and empathy, controlling anger, having courage, and handling grief are just some of the social emotional topics we cover in our class on a daily basis.
We would love to start a social emotional section in our classroom library so that we have a colorful reference to read when dealing with one of many feelings.
Our special needs students often struggle to understand social ques, people's feelings, and handling their own emotions. When we read these colorful stories during our social emotional circle each day, the students are able to see and visually comprehend and have rich discussions about all of these very important topics.
