My students are a vivacious bunch of learners who are beyond excited to start their elementary school careers. They have a thirst for knowledge that refreshes my love for teaching and learning! Their excitement is beyond contagious. They are rapidly growing and learning and finding their place in the world. Their curiosity grows by the day and they inspire both me and everyone around them. They are learning to grow and change in their new school community, quickly finding their place in it all! Our diverse community is enjoying welcoming them into our family of learners.
Next school year we are focusing on social emotional learning and are trying to build a social emotional library to foster kindness, responsibility, respect, and honesty among our students.
My Project
An important part of first grade social emotional learning is to have concrete examples of everyday issues students will experience. These books are high quality read alouds that will allow students to have conversations about important social and emotional issues such as working together, listening, using kind words, frustration tolerance, managing emotions, and building resilience. The students will also be working on projects and activities based around the lessons taught within the books.
Most books on the list are by the author Julia Cook, who has published 76 books from the National Center for Youth Issues.
