Help me give my students the opportunity to flex their muscles and their brains at the same time with fitness mats and exercisers!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students usually fall into one of two categories: my regulars and then the students who only come into the library when their teachers force them. My regulars are doers and thinkers, reading and searching for themselves and for their assignments. Others, though, take a little more encouragement.
One thing they all have in common is that, for many of them, my library is their only source for reading materials and information.
They count on me to be able to complete their assignments and help them choose the next book to read, and they depend on me to give them the best strategies for media and digital literacy. The majority of my students live in high poverty neighborhoods, and they just aren't able to run out and buy that new popular book or that fancy new gadget.
My students have such potential, and they could do so much and give so much to the world. They just need support and backing to make it happen. They need their library.
Research shows that literacy improves with movement and exercise, and it's no secret that SEL outcomes gain momentum when students can stretch their muscles and move to let off steam. Yoga mats, kick pedals, and stair steppers are quick and easy methods to get my students moving in the library.
With flexible exercise options in the library, my students will be able to work their brains and their bodies!
Plus, students who need extra support for their SEL needs can find a new way through the pressured moments that we all feel sometimes. I will be able to offer more productive methods to work off all that energy!
