This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from loving, involved families in Pontiac, Michigan. Our school is a “turnaround” school in its second year of reform and we are seeing so much academic and social growth! I am honored to be working in a school that puts kids first and trusts teachers to do what's best for their individual students.
It is very important for me for my students to feel safe and secure in my classroom as well as at school and in their surrounding community.
Part of felt safety includes feeling like they belong, and as though their contributions help to mold and create our classroom community. Every student is an asset; their knowledge and lived experiences are resources that I draw from daily.
My Project
My students LOVE to create. As they gain confidence in interacting with peers, I am noticing that they are interested in dramatic play, including building characters and food out of play-doh. Legos would be a great addition to our classroom because of their link to STEM as well as social-emotional learning.
Building with friends will help them with social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and encouraging and celebrating one another’s work.
Students can create alone or together during recess and “choice” times. Building with Legos will also aid in helping students’ fine-motor skills for those who need practice. Finally, building structures and play scenarios will provide jumping-off points for writing, which they also love.
