My students come from a variety of different socioeconomic backgrounds. 50% of our school population receives free or reduced rate lunch. My students are not defined by this statistic, but it does affect the needs of our school. Many of the students see school as a safe place to grow and learn. My group of first graders are energetic, hardworking, and kind. They are a group that is always doing their best and wants to continue to learn. Our classroom strives to achieve our goals each and every day!
My Project
My students need play-based learning incorporated back into their day. Fred Rogers said, "Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood." My students are six- and seven-years old, and they need time to interact with their peers and learn social and emotional skills.
Giving them opportunities to play will help them develop their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive skills.
Play is an important way to nurture optimal early childhood brain development.
In this project, I requested a play kitchen, play food, and train set. These items will be used in writing projects and science projects. They will be used to make our projects more engaging, and they will help the students develop key skills such as sharing and collaboration.
My students need time to be little. We spend so much time focusing on rigorous academics, but we need time to learn how to be a good friend and how to play with others. I have noticed in the past years my first graders have struggled with this. Having these supplies would help me teach the social emotional skills they need to be successful in life.
